As I’ve been spending a fair amount of time recently reading the recently published A Tidal Odyssey; Ed Ricketts and the Making of Between Pacific Tides for an upcoming review, as well as devoting still more to refreshing my memories of Between Pacific Tides itself, I was delighted to receive a new book from University of Chicago Press that takes up a very much related theme but in in a remarkably different way.

From the Seashore to the Seafloor; An Illustrated Tour of Sandy Beaches, Kelp Forests, Coral Reefs, and Life in the Ocean’s Depths by Dr. Janet Voight and Peggy Macnamara, with a forward by David Quammen takes it’s readers on a watercolor illustrated journey between its title locations of the northeastern Pacific Ocean, blending into its narrative explanations of some of the creatures and systems to be found along the way with exhortations to conserve them.

The overall effect of the book is quite charming, and it’s gentle watercolors are truly lovely and soothing indeed – very much the right choice for so many of us who are struggling through these… shall we say “challenging” times.
