Back in the latter part of 2019, Tiffany Francis-Baker‘s Dark Skies; a Journey into the Wild Night was published by Bloomsbury. Being a collection of her research about and personal explorations into the nocturnal world, her narrative ranges from history and folklore, through science and geography, and well into literature and the visual arts. Truly, it is a superb book in which wholly to lose oneself.
Now, with the publication by Bradt of her new Dark Skies: Britain & Ireland – A Stargazer’s Guide, she expands on the astronomical elements she first touched upon in her 2019 book, and guides her readers into the delights of astronomy by leading through a tour of the best places to look up in wonder throughout the the scepter’d and emerald isles respectively.
For those not already engaged in amateur astronomy, Ms. Francis-Baker’s new guide is an excellent opportunity to discover a delightful new hobby, providing as it does an introduction to the activity itself prior to beginning the tour of the best sites in which to engage in it. And for those who are already amateur astronomers, the guide provides very useful information about all of the International Dark-Sky Association’s Certified Sites as well as the many Discovery Sites to be found within the book’s geographic parameters.
