I’ve never seen a Manx Shearwater, however following a number of long and highly informative conversations at BirdFair with the nice folks at The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales, I’d very much like one day to make the effort to reach Skomer and avail myself of the opportunity to do so.

Mark Avery, I suspect, has seen a Manx Shearwater – likely more than one, in fact – and describes them as “wonderful birds.” However when initially beginning to read Roger Morgan-Grenville‘s new book Shearwater; a Bird, an Ocean, and a Long Way Home, he apparently experienced a bit of trepidation, reporting that he “did wonder […] what a whole book on Manx Shearwaters might be.” Yet something he discovered as he continued his reading seems to have sorted out his initial hesitancy. Visit his blog and read his entire review of the book to learn more of what he found.

Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
