I’m not entirely sure just what the meaning behind the name of the alternative rock music group Ben Folds Five is (particularly as it was apparently a trio), but in the case of Mark Avery’s most recent Sunday Book Review in which he takes Dieter Helm’s newly published Net Zero: How We Stop Causing Climate Change from HarperCollins UK, five fold is how Mark describes his reasons for recommending the book. “This book is very clearly written, on an important subject, by someone who knows their stuff, by someone who is a friend of the natural environment and, perhaps most importantly, it challenges my own starting point on this subject.”

That last point is particularly laudable in these days when too many only read and discuss things with which they already agree and that pose no challenges to them. Read Mark’s entire review to discover what further thoughts he expressed about Prof. Helm’s new book.

Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
