“…a thoughtful and well-informed look at nature conservation in the UK and every few pages I was thinking ‘That’s a very good point’ or ‘That’s an interesting way of putting it – and true too!’ or ‘I’d never thought of it that way’.” So begins Mark in his assessment of Laurence Rose‘s new book Framing Nature; Conservation and Culture, the subject of his most recent Sunday Book Review.

You’ll likely remember Mr. Rose from his previous, critically acclaimed 2018 book The Long Spring; Tracking the Arrival of Spring Through Europe recording Rose’s adventures arising from his desire to explore “Europe’s remarkable heritage of exceptional places and the wildlife, traditions and people associated with them”. In this new work, he takes up the question of how we consider nature – as Mark puts it “‘Framing’ refers to how we look at the subject – from what angle, with what prejudices and built-in preconceptions.” I very much encourage you to read Mark’s complete review to learn more.

Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
