This is the section of The Well-read Naturalist where all essays and notes regarding the project of reading the complete works of Plato during 2023 are collected.
Plato’s “Apology” is a work I have previously read many times before I took it up once again at the beginning of 2023 as the first book in the year’s Big Read, and the charges made against Socrates by his accusers has many times struck me as poignant given my own intellectual interests. However in light of societal events over the past few years, I found the primary charge particularly so.
While there are multiple methods of organizing a reading of Plato’s works, I am planning to follow (generally, at least) the one presented in the chapter “Introduction to the Study of Plato” from “The Cambridge Companion to Plato,” 2nd Edition, a book that I shall also be reading along with my reading of Plato’s works themselves in order to deepen my understanding.
