Having recently read that a new volume of the New Naturalist Library was soon to be available, I had an intuition that Mark Avery already had a copy of it and would soon be publishing one of his Sunday Book Reviews about it.

So paying a visit to his blog today I was not on the least surprised to discover that the subject of his most recent review is, of course, David Wilkinson’s Ecology and Natural History, New Naturalist Library volume 143.

In this new book, Prof. Wilkinson, writes Dr. Avery, takes his readers on “an exploration and an explanation of ecological principles illustrated by UK natural history, much of it through strolls through particular parts of our farmland, forests and uplands.” He goes on to observe that while he admittedly doesn’t read all of them, in his view “The New Naturalist series has […] been resting on its laurels for a few years, [however t]his book raises the bar again, and is an event. [It] definitely feels like a new New Naturalist.”

I very much encourage all interested to visit Mark Avery’s blog and read his full review of the book.

Links to Dr. Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
