Those of you who know Mark Avery no doubt already know of his work in conservation – both of species as well as habitats. His A Message from Martha; the Extinction of the Passenger Pigeon and Its Relevance Today remains one of the best books available on the subject, and his Inglorious; Conflict in the Uplands is a superbly aimed broadside against the sheer waste and abuse of the uplands for the benefit of a very small number of grouse shooting enthusiasts.

Alas, writes Mark this week, the second edition of Inglorious is now listed as out of stock at the publishers, and discussion of an updated third edition is “tbc.” For my part, I hope the “tbc” changes to “in development” very soon, as Mark has quite a lot to say – a taste of which his readers receive this week – about recent developments with the present British government’s activities in the areas of wildlife conservation and habitat management. I encourage all to pop over to his blog to discover some of what may be expected in a possible third edition of Inglorious.

Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
