Of the many fine series of natural history books available in Great Britain – and there are quite a lot of them indeed – one of the most coveted by naturalists not only in the British Isles but around the world is the British Wildlife Collection. An extension of the much-respected British Wildlife magazine and published by Bloomsbury, this richly illustrated and authoritatively written series of hardcover monograph books was inaugurated in 2012 with the publication of Peter Marren’s Mushrooms and has now reached its tenth volume with the upcoming publication in April 2021 of Martin Warren‘s Butterflies.

Not surprisingly, Mark, being Mark, has got hold of an advance copy for review. He has clearly been quite impressed by it, rhetorically flourishing “If you like butterflies (who doesn’t?), care about them (who wouldn’t?) and want to understand them better then this is a book for you.” I encourage you to read his entire review to learn more about this new addition to the series.

Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
