From its first edition originally published in 1950, Trees to Know in Oregon has been an essential field guide for naturalists, ecologists, foresters, and anyone else interested in identifying and understanding the trees to be found in its title-referenced U.S. state.

Now, in honor of its 70th anniversary, Oregon State University Extension Service has published a new extensively updated and expanded edition, with the new title of Trees to Know in Oregon and Washington. Still under the authorship of Dr. Edward C. Jensen, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Forest Ecosystems & Society of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University, this new edition expands its official range into the adjacent state of Washington, adds several rare species native to southwest Oregon, updates taxonomic names that have since been changed since the 2010 edition, and further enhances its ecological content by the inclusion of a new section on how Northwest forests are likely to be affected by changing climates.

Nota bene: Dr. Jensen is also the author of another must-have Pacific Northwest field guide: Shrubs to Know in Pacific Northwest Forests, which, to quote the OSU Extension Service catalog listing, “features 100 of the most common shrubs that grow in and around Pacific Northwest forests–from southern British Columbia to northern California and from the Pacific Ocean to the northern Rockies.”
