You’ve likely heard different animals referenced in regard to economic phenomena (bull market, bear market, black swan, etc.), but have you ever wondered how and why the jargon of business and finance has come to associate certain animals with different occurrences, trends, and entities?

Mark Avery recently took up a new book from Pavilion that addresses these very questions for his Sunday Book Review. Writing about Bear Markets and Beyond; A Bestiary of Business Terms by Dhruti Shah and Dominic Bailey, Mark described it as “fun” and a “celebration” of how we incorporate wildlife into language.

As for myself, as one with degrees in both English literature as well as an MBA, I think it sounds delightfully informative, and I hope a copy one day crosses my own desk.

Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
