Spain’s Extremadura region is famous with wildlife enthusiasts – particularly birders – from all about the world. I’ve not personally made a visit there (yet…) myself, but Mark Avery has, and he is by his own admission, a fan of the area and its many natural wonders.

Therefore when he had a look at Ian Parsons‘ new A Vulture Landscape Twelve Months in Extremadura from Whittles Publishing for his most recent Sunday Book Review, he was understandably favorably disposed to it. Writes Mark, “Turning the pages of this book reminded me of hot August days out on the plains, spring mornings in the woodlands and winter evenings watching Cranes heading to roost.” But of course, this isn’t a general book about the landscape of the area – although that figures prominently – it’s central theme is the Extremadura’s vulture species, about which Mark notes, Mr. Parsons is an enthusiast, “Ian’s enthusiasm for this place, its varied wildlife and for vultures in particular leaps off the pages.”

Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
