Here in Scappoose, “grasshopper season” is that brief period in mid-August when the rain stops for a few weeks, the mid-day temperature rises significantly, and the birds have yet to make their return appearances. This Carolina Grasshopper (also called a Mourning Cloak Grasshopper), Dissosteira carolina, is one of many that make up the majority of moving wildlife during these late summer doldrums.
