Understanding history should not be considered as simply knowing the facts of what happened; it must also include understanding how histories themselves are written and communicated. In furtherance of this, I very much recommend Prof. Zachary Schrag’s recently published “The Princeton Guide to Historical Research” to readers both within as well as widely beyond the field of academic historical research.

Like many readers of The Well-read Naturalist, I have long been drawn not only to books on natural history subjects themselves but to other works as well – memoirs, novels, etc. – written by authors who live or lived in close touch with nature. Needless to say, Ms. Ingalls Wilder was indeed such an author.
