As the summer wanes, it’s time to begin thinking about the coming autumn (or if you are like me and follow an older calendar, you are already doing so as autumn is with us and has been since it once again began at the cross-quarter festival of Lughnasadh on the first day of August). And of all the joys of this new season, one I’ve recently come to welcome with particular enthusiasm is the publication of the new edition of Lia Leendertz‘s very handy as well as superbly edifying little book The Alamanac; A Seasonal Guide.

Published under the Gaia imprint of Octopus Publishing, The Almanac; A Seasonal Guide to 2026 became available on 28 August 2025. The ninth edition in her superb series of these pocket-sized treasure-troves, true to tradition, this new volume features a wealth of interesting, useful, and indeed, life-inspiring information for all those seeking to live their lives in harmony with the natural world.

Divided into monthly sections, The Almanac presents its readers with useful overviews of things to watch for each month – both on the land, in the water and in the sky – as well as essays on folklore, seasonal verse, and edifying reminders that beyond the messes humans seem determined to create for themselves through their petty and ignorant machinations, nature not only remains but determinedly persists. From star maps and Moon phase charts to seasonally-appropriate gardening advice, woodcraft, and recipes, all who seek to live in harmony with the natural world and its cycles should have a copy of this delightful as well as delightfully helpful little book.

And just for a bit of extra added goodness, all those interested – and I hope that includes you – may see and hear the author herself in a video about this new edition The Almanac that she posted to her Substack account on its day of publication.
