Pioneer Girl cover 300hWhen I first heard that the manuscript of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s previously unpublished autobiography was to finally see publication, my mind raced in anticipation of what it might contain. For, like many readers of The Well-read Naturalist, I have long been drawn not only to books on natural history subjects themselves but to other works as well – memoirs, novels, etc. – written by authors who live or lived in close touch with nature. Needless to say, Ms. Ingalls Wilder was indeed such an author.

Now, thanks to the tireless efforts of Pamela Smith Hill, author of Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer’s Life and the entire staff of the South Dakota State Historical Society Press, Pioneer Girl; The Annotated Autobiography has been published.

To say that this book is “heavily annotated” would be an understatement; each double page spread contains three columns of notes for each column of narrative text. Needless to say, it is going straight to the top of my “to read for review” stack but it may require a bit more time to read than most other books I review.
