In honor of the opening of the Smithsonian Libraries’ new “Once There Were Billions” exhibit, Joel Greenberg, author of the recently published A Feathered River Across the Sky; The Passenger Pigeon’s Flight to Extinction will be delivering a lecture titled “Echoes of Their Wings: The Passenger Pigeon and its Legacy” followed by a book signing on Tuesday, 24 June 2014 at the Baird Auditorium of the National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.

The “Once There Were Billions” exhibit explores not only the history and extinction of the Passenger Pigeon but other now also extinct North American bird species such as the Great Auk, the Heath Hen, and the Carolina Parakeet. Mounted specimens of all these species from the museum’s collections as well as books and artwork pertaining to them will be on display as part of the exhibit. Other presentations, includes readings by authors Christopher Cokinos and Susan Stockdale, and a screening of the film “From Billions to None,” will also be held on future dates throughout the exhibit’s 2014 run.
