Anyone who has ever seen a billfish leap can testify to what an arresting sight it is. Both apex oceanic predators and coveted prizes to anglers; swordfish, sailfish, and marlin have long dominated their environment as well as the human imagination. Stan Ulanski – both a marine scientist as well as an avid angler – delves into both these aspects of billfish in his new book The Billfish Story: Swordfish, Sailfish, Marlin, and Other Gladiators of the Sea from The University of Georgia Press. As a third generation fisherman myself, I am very eager to discover what he has to teach about these fascinating creatures.
