When you live in a small town, being widely known as an avid bird watcher sooner or later confers upon you the honorary distinction of being the village ornithologist. In my own case, it is a role the responsibilities of which – speaking to local school classrooms about birds, helping with boy and girl scout nature badges, leading the occasional field trip, and answering bird-related questions from members of the community – are not particularly difficult and are most certainly enjoyable to an enthusiast such as myself who loves to share accumulated knowledge of the subject with others. However the last of these responsibilities, fielding bird-related questions, can sometimes involve confronting nature in some of her less-than-appealing aspects.
