Like many people living in rural areas all across America, I was awakened this past Saturday morning in the same manner I have been on week-end mornings for the past few months now – by the sound of gunfire in the distance. As soon as the sun crests the horizon, men and women who have been patiently waiting in the cold since long before dawn get their first opportunity of the day to bag a duck or two, or perhaps even a goose. As an avid, long-time bird watcher, I whole-heartedly welcome the sounds of their activities.

My old Audubon chapter was (justifiably) big on promoting duck stamps to its members, even though we were nowhere near any hunting areas. Although I can’t ever see myself shooting ducks for fun, I do like to eat them, so I can’t judge hunters too harshly—as long as they hunt in a sustainable fashion, take only what they can eat, and eat everything they take.

OK, I will fly to Cape May in september, shoot birds with my camera and buy a duck (bird)stamp 😉

Amen. I cannot improve on what you said and I’m in complete agreement. In fact, I need to go buy a duck stamp(s) today! Thanks for this great post, John.
