I’m an Ornithologist and Birdwatching guide on Southern Brazil. I really hope there will be a iPad version of the greatest Field guide for the Brazilian BIrds “A Field Guide to the Birds of Brazil, Ber van Perlo” It would be just an amazing tool for my work.

I’m a bit of a contradiction. I’m still pretty young (I guess), and am definitely technologically savy. I love gadgets, computers, etc. But I also love books, physical books that I can hold, flip through, and collect.

I’ve never read an eBook, though I have read some older books that are available as free pdf’s. I definitely didn’t think that birding related books would do well in the electronic format. But iBird changed my mind somewhat. I think it very well demonstrates the potential that electronic field guides have. But I still had some reservations about its use as a reference rather than a field guide.

But the iPad could change that. I really can’t wait to see what the folks at iBird have planned for it. And who wouldn’t want all of their unwieldy reference material available in one single, lightweight device? I’d love to have, for example, The Shorebird Guide, Pete Dunne’s Field Guide Companion, and Gulls of the Americas all on something like the iPad. Certainly beats carting around 20+ pounds of books for a trip to the coast.

But your reservations about compatibility and obsolescence are valid. As long as there is a single, universal format, I think it will be ok. Hopefully it would be like DVD’s. Sure, blu-rays are much better, but all blu-ray players can still play DVD’s as well. But with Apple, I’m afraid it will be something proprietary. Especially since there isn’t a single ebook format currently (is there?), whereas mp3′s were already widely established when ipods came out.
